My thoughts while reading it

Ghouls? Stone Men? Wax People? God-like Worms? Alchemy? Dark Gods? Thieves? A steampunk city without steam? Labyrinthine underworld? I believe I need not add any more buzzwords to convince you to pick up this book. However, in case I haven’t succeeded, then read my review…

I’ve been on a quest for a book that could evoke the same feelings as the TV series Arcane, and in “The Gutter Prayer” by Gareth Hanrahan, I discovered a masterpiece that not only met but exceeded my expectations. This is not just a story; it’s an emotional rollercoaster set in a steampunk-inspired city, devoid of steam but brimming with alchemy. The narrative unfolds across different parts of the city, immersing readers in both the underworld and the realm of the affluent, all brought to life by a cast of eccentric characters who breathe vitality into the city’s darkened streets. This city, like a silent observer, plays a crucial role in the narrative, shaping the destinies of the characters and adding layers of complexity to the story. The emotional journey embarked upon by individuals from various corners of the city, culminating in a gripping conflict, is accompanied by the unravelling of enigmatic secrets that keep you on the edge of your seat. What sets this book apart is not only the characters but the city itself, a character with its labyrinthine streets, imposing structures, and the underworld of Ghouls, which feels like a city within a city. The bizarre setting, blending a dark Arcane ambiance with an epic Malazan-like feel, is utterly captivating.

From the very first chapter, the narrative grips you with a prologue narrated in the second person – a risky choice, yet executed flawlessly. The decision to employ such a narrative technique, often considered a gamble, pays off in spades, igniting the reader’s imagination with a surreal and enigmatic start. The mysterious beginning sets the perfect tone for the reader’s mind, and the phenomenal writing style continues to enchant throughout. The fusion of a modern setting with an epic writing style reminiscent of Steve Erikson adds an extra layer of mystery to the narrative, making the experience even more enthralling.

The characters, each with their unique quirks and burdens, steal the spotlight. A voracious Ghoul, a tormented Stone Man, and a cunning thief harbouring secrets and wielding god-like powers – these are not your typical fantasy archetypes. Hanrahan’s bold departure from convention is a breath of fresh air, and the characters’ flaws and vulnerabilities make them remarkably authentic. Spar… Spar is the character who endures the most, trapped in a decaying body that could transform into a stone coffin at any moment. He’ll turn into stone, but not before feeling the slow and agonizing calcification of all his joints and organs. Spar is a character so tender and compassionate, one can’t help but wish him nothing but the best and yearn to embrace him. Despite the recurring setbacks he faces, he refuses to give in, displaying a resilience I can only aspire to embody. He stands as the Robin Hood of this city, much like his father before him, driven by a desire to see prosperity among the downtrodden. In this pursuit, however, he sometimes loses himself, a sacrifice made for the greater good. Spar is a character who will forever reside in my heart. Even Rat, the Ghoul, is not without his complexities. His transformation reveals a resemblance to Gollum more than anyone else, portraying an internal struggle as he endeavours to preserve his true essence. Surprisingly, Eladora has also become one of my favourites in this narrative, a character who, despite her quick intimidation, academic prowess, and an overall demeanour of insecurity and annoyance, feels remarkably genuine. She emanates the authenticity of a real person thrust from our world into this fantastical one, grappling with accusations and harbouring humanly wicked thoughts. I am eagerly anticipating what unfolds in her storyline next. It’s worth noting that the supporting cast is equally well-developed, enriching the narrative with a sense of a bustling city filled with inhabitants rather than an empty backdrop. Each secondary character is intricately crafted, serving a purpose in the grand tapestry of the story and showcasing their own unique form of madness. The author’s meticulous attention to detail becomes evident as every character contributes to the vibrant life of the city, making it feel like a living, breathing entity.

The various magical elements seamlessly fit into this city, accentuating its dark and gritty atmosphere. Alchemy, a often-overlooked magic system in fantasy, takes center stage here, and the Alchemy Guild’s creations transcend traditional expectations. From alchemical bombs to grotesque scientific marvels, the narrative is enriched by the interplay of science and magic. The introduction of cruel gods, abhorrent creatures, and divine magic adds layers of depth, transforming the story into an intricate dance of elements.

What sets “The Gutter Prayer” apart is its sheer uniqueness. In a genre often saturated with familiar tropes, Hanrahan’s creation stands as a beacon of originality. The emotional resonance, the intricacy of world-building, and the genuine humanity of the characters make this a literary gem. As readers, we are not mere spectators; we are invited into a city teeming with wonders and horrors, where every alley conceals secrets, and every character carries the weight of their own madness. If you seek a book that transcends the ordinary, a tale that tugs at the heartstrings while immersing you in a world of mystery and grandeur, then “The Gutter Prayer” is an absolute must-read. Prepare to be transported to a city where shadows dance, alchemy thrives, and the human soul is laid bare in all its beauty and fragility. This is not just a book; it’s an unforgettable journey through the realms of fantasy and emotion, leaving an indelible mark on the reader’s heart and mind.

I didn’t like book 2 as much, but I guess the magnificence of book 2 was never going to be matched. I still liked it, just not as much.
